I knew early on that American Idol was involved in a conspiracy. In past years, they’d given us a diverse group to vote for with rockers, and entertainers such as Adam Lambert.
This year, however, I noticed that by the time the judges sent us singers to vote for, they had removed much of the diversity of previous years. There were way too many ballad singers and virtually no high energy singer/entertainers. And the girls seriously outranked the boys. Not only that, there wasn’t a single “white boy with a guitar.”
I mention that because last year, several blogs were complaining that yet again, another “white boy with a guitar” was getting all the votes, and they were peeved. Some viewers were tired of this particular type of contestant, though the fans obviously outnumbered the malcontents as the “white boys with guitars” kept winning, possibly due to the “teenage hormones going crazy over the cute dude singing a song” factor. When I was a teenager, a boy strumming a guitar singing as if to me, definitely sent my hormones raging.
Season 7 gave us David Cook. Season 8 gave us Kris Allen. Season 9 gave us Lee DeWyze. Season 10 gave us Scotty McCreery. And Season 11 gave us Phillip Phillips. Maybe they didn’t all play guitars, but it was close enough to irk a lot of viewers.
So this season, the Idol decision makers decided to make sure that no way, no how, could a “white boy with a guitar” even be in the running. They even made sure that the girls outshined the guys, almost guaranteeing a female win. And so we’ll have it. The top five are all girls.
But it isn’t enough that we’re guaranteed a female winner. I believe the American Idol executives want to CHOOSE that winner. Jimmy and the judges gush all over Kree Harrison, as if they are ready to crown her. She hasn’t been put down even once. She’s never had to face a judge ripping her heart out, and then try to muster up the joy to come back the next week and sing like it didn’t hurt.
Poor Janelle Arthur has been hit hard by Jimmy and the judges. It’s as if she can’t do anything right in their eyes, and I don’t believe she deserves such harsh treatment.
Then there’s Candice Glover and Angie Miller. Candice remains my favorite. I believe she has the best and most unique voice, and she can do things with her voice that few singers can match. Candice is flawless, but the judges want Kree. I don’t get it. Candice has more talent in her little finger than just about any other singer out there.
I have to admit, though, that Angie took the lead last week in my eyes, at least for the week, topping even Candice. Yet the judges fall all over Kree in a manner that I’m sure is designed to manipulate voting in her favor. American Idol wants her to win.
Amber and Janelle will probably be the bottom two this week, and Janelle will probably go home. At least if the judges have their say. Would they save her? I think at this point they’d probably save whoever got voted off. They’re running out of time for the save so it has to be this week or next week.
No matter what happens, though, we’re guaranteed not to have another “white boy with a guitar” as the American Idol winner. Personally, I’m rooting for Candice. But I’m sure you’ve figured that out by now 😉
